Brought to America through Hawaii by Japanese Masters
in the early part of the 20th century, Reiki is a hands-on healing
technique which calls upon universal energy to heal and balance the body.
It is thought to have originated as a Tibetan buddhist practice that was
rediscovered in the late 1800s by Dr. Mikao Usui, a Japanese Buddhist.
It is taught, one level at a time, by a master to students who are recognized
by that master as descendents of his or her lineage. For many years, the
symbols and significance of the Reiki teaching were considered
highly esoteric, passed down from master to student by word of mouth alone.
Now, however, Reiki is more familiar to the general public and one may
find several good texts on the background, the symbols, and the results
one may expect from Reiki treatments, as well as an informative
history of its development.
Valentine McKay-Riddell is a certified Reiki Master and Teacher, in the Lineage of Dr. Mikao Usui, Dr. Hyashi, Hawayo Takata, and Iris Ishikuro. Her Teacher was Nancy Ananda Howell.
